Expressions About Bulls
Posted on: 04 May, 2009 11:34 AM
Bulls are large animals with frightening strength. They have inspired dangerous sports such as bullfighting and bull riding. Considering a bull's sharp horns and deadly charge, it's easy to understand why the animal has inspired a number of colorful expressions in English. The following exercise will help you learn some of the more useful ones.
Choose the expression that completes the statement.
- 1. Sarah can be . It's not easy to work with her on a team because she doesn't listen to others' opinions but simply does things the way she thinks is best.
- 2. Joe is the kind of person who doesn't hide from problems. He likes to and see that the job gets done.
- 3. 2007 was . Many people have since lost their confidence and wonder when and if a strong economy will return.
- 4. I'm surprised the boss hasn't fired Henry yet. The two of them several times a week.
- 5. Kelly is . She always seems to say the wrong things at the wrong times, and her words make others feel either hurt or confused.

Thanks for the support. I need to purchase a good camera myself! I've been working with a digital camera that just happens to have a video option. It's getting old, but I've felt comfortable using it. For a long time I didn't have a tripod. I'd advise you to get one if it wasn't included with the camera. A tripod sure beats using stacks of books on chairs.
Don't be afraid just to dive into it. You'll learn as you go. I'm still learning, too. I only recently began to add music to my videos.
I took a quick trip through the content on your site. There's a
lot of great stuff to check out. Thank you. Good luck to
you.

Your answer (edited): I tried to take the bull by the horns and
got hurt! Now I am...
Nice response! Very clever. If there's some truth in your
statement, then I'd advise you to get back on the horse that threw
you. (There could be another lesson about horses!) We say that if a
rider gets thrown from a horse, it's best to get back in the saddle
and try riding the horse again. It's the same as the more common
saying: If at first you don't succeed, try, try again.
Best wishes to you.
:) There is a painful truth in my words but you are right, we should never say die.
I might learn to ride a horse after a lesson from you on them. I'll look forward to it.

Kudos, Jennifer!
Very well done!
You have inspired me with ideas, too.
I recently purchased a Flip Mino digital video camera and plan to
record lessons with it. I'm not (yet) as talented as you are at
editing and packaging.
Very, very well done - professional, pleasant, andragogically
sound -- nice!
Kudos!

Not only do you teach people how to use English better, but you
have also taught me how to teach English better. The wonderful
world of technology. I will try to use it more fully. Yeah! New
toys!
I'm still like a child, too, when it comes to using all the latest technology for online teaching. I play around, make mistakes, but overall I'm excited to dig around in this toy chest we found. Who knows what the toy makers will hand us next?

Answer to the question 1, exercise 2: i tried to take the bull by the horn and got hurt! Now I am really scared of the bull.
Your teaching style is very calm and its a delight to view your
video lectures. Also this forum is better than Youtube for learning
purpose, a little slow however, or perhaps my PC is getting older.
Anyway thank you and happy teaching!

Thank Jennifer,
This is my first lesson I take from you. It's really very
exciting to learn new English idioms.
Let me review some of them without seeing the results above.
- a bullheaded person : a stubborn one
- to lock horns: argue with others
- to take the bull by the horns: deal directly with problems
- bull market >< bear market
- like a bull in the china shop: clumsy
- do not mess with the bull, you will get the horns
Thanks again.
